Worm Farming

by lotus on September 27, 2011

Here at the Garden of Eden, we have been worm farming for several years.  This is a short description of what it entails, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Vermicompost is the product or process of composting utilizing various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and earthworms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. Vermicast, similarly known as worm castings, worm humus or worm manure, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by a species of earthworm.

Every 3-4 weeks we mix up a whole batch of kitchen scraps and recycled paper products to feed our worms.  We are so grateful for their voracious appetites for material that would otherwise be discarded in the modern industrial system.  They magically turn “garbage” into gold – compost!!!
